A Living History In Currency
Conservation challenges repurposing an 18th century building into a public museum.
Housed in the former central currency distribution building of the state government in the historical district of Kota in Jakarta is the Bank Indonesia Numismatic Museum. This 18th century building was once the disused De Javasche Bank building in the Old Town of Jakarta; a place that holds significant historical interest as a cultural heritage centre of Indonesia’s storied past.
Bank Indonesia, the central figure in commerce and trade, retains enormous historical knowledge concerning Bank Indonesia’s role and contribution in the monetary and economic journey of Indonesia over time.
Slated as a key tourist attraction in Jakarta, the development of the Old Town and the Bank Indonesia Numismatic Museum is now the must-go destination to visit Jakarta’s rich cultural heritage.

A radical approach to display amidst stringent conservation needs.
Trika’s position to deliver over a hundred museum display cases took almost three long years as the process of building the museum was developed at the same time as the planning and production and delivery installation phase of the cases. Central to this design and build phase was a surprisingly young team of architects who took the visionary route to introduce as many advanced and customised case systems as possible. Large format drawers were re-designed to work as vertical display sliding vitrines; an idea borrowed from the philatelic museums in Europe, except now they are used to display paper currencies as well as coins. Framed windows of showcases were mated with sloped document cases to form a continuous line of currency islands, each sporting a fully adjustable, floating Magna Slide for viewers to peer at the finer details of paper currencies.
Anti-reflective glass from Schott Glass AG were integrated into these cases, and all came laminated with the requirement for high-security features complying with the international museum standards of BS5544/EN356.
The Bank Indonesia Numismatic Museum in Kota, Jakarta continues today as a monumental symbol of a successful collaboration with the architects and technical managers together with Trika to develop a contemporary museum of international repute and standing.
